چکیده

We examine the intertemporal optimal consumption and investment problem in a continuous-time economy with a divisible durable good. Consumption services are assumed to be proportional to the stock of the good held and adjustment of the stock is costly, in that it involves the payment of a proportional transaction cost. For the case in which the investor has an isoelastic utility function and asset prices follow a geometric Brownian motion, we establish the existence of an optimal policy and provide an explicit representation for the value function. We show that the investor acts so as to maintain the ratio of the stock of the durable to total wealth in a "xed (nonstochastic) range and that the optimal investment policy involves stochastic portfolio weights. The dependence of the optimal policies on the parameters of the model is also discussed. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classixcation: D11; D91; G11; C61

Optimal Insurance Coverage of a Durable Consumption Good with a Premium Loading in a Continuous Time Economy

This article analyzes the optimal deductible level of insurance on durable consumption goods with a positive premium loading in a continuous-time economy. Assuming financial assets and durable consumption goods can be traded without transaction costs, we provide an explicit solution for the optimal insurance coverage of durable consumption goods together with optimal trading strategies for the ...

Consumption, Durable Goods, and Transaction Costs

We study consumption of durable and nondurable goods when the durable good is subject to transaction costs. In the model, agents derive utility from a service flow of a durable good and a consumption flow of a nondurable good. The key feature of the model is the existence of a fixed transaction cost in the durable good market. The fixed cost induces an inaction region in the purchase of the dur...

Efficient Endogenous Fluctuations in Two-Sector OLG Model

We consider a two-sector two-good two-periods overlapping generations model with inelastic labor, consumption in both period of life and homothetic CES preferences. There are two consumption goods, one pure (non-durable) consumption and one consumable (durable) capital good which can be either consumed or invested. Assuming gross substitutability and a capital intensive pure consumption good, w...

Consumption-Based Asset Pricing: Durable Goods, Adjustment Costs, and Aggregation

In this paper, we investigate the implications of non-separable preferences over durable and nondurable consumption for asset pricing tests when adjusting durable consumption is costly. In an economy without adjustment costs, in which a frictionless rental market exists for the durable good, the standard Euler equation with respect to nondurable consumption will hold for each individual agent a...

Dynamics of Aggregate Purchases of an Illiquid Durable Good with Risky Assets and Heterogeneous Agents
